கம்பன் ஏமாந்தான் - Kamban Emandhaan - Nizhal Nijamagirathu

This is an old classic by SPB and the lyrics by Kannadasan. The movie, which was an off beat movie and was the craze during my college days, may not feel the same way looking back! Kamban here is a famous Tamil poet from long time ago, famous for having translated the epic Valmiki Ramayanam into Tamil. "Kamban was duped - he called the beautiful young women flowers. This is all pure imagination!" "Why did he call the eyes arrows? Is it because they pierce you? Why did he call them to be sweet milk? Is it because they boil?" "If you read a great book (like Thirukkural, a tamil classic) in the light of an oil lamp, isn't the light that deserves greatness? Instead if you burn one's heart with your focussed looks, the fire, it is not the fire that is to blame." This is beyond me, except, Kannadasan is pointing out that the angry woman that she is singing to is to blame and not the looks and that the same can be used differently! "I saw a long list of great Tamil poets who were cheated by young women - Valluvar, Ilango & Bharathi. Not only did all those fall in this trap, but me too." "On the other hand, a woman's anger only lasts till the kitchen. If a good looking man arrives to do his job (in the bedroom) the norm is that the anger vanishes." Kamalhasan doing his overacting, norms of his time. But the song is simply fantastic.

கம்பன் ஏமாந்தான் இளம் கன்னியரை ஒரு மலர் என்றானே கற்பனை செய்தானே கம்பன் ஏமாந்தான் அம்பு விழி என்று ஏன் சொன்னான் அது பாய்வதினால் தானோ - அவள் அருஞ்சுவைப் பாலென ஏன் சொன்னான் அது கொதிப்பதனால் தானோ தீபத்தின் ஜோதியில் திருக்குறள் படித்தால் தீபத்தின் பெருமையன்றோ தீபத்தினால் ஒரு நெஞ்சத்தை எரித்தால் தீபமும் பாவமன்றோ வள்ளுவன் இளங்கோ பாரதி என்றொரு வரிசையை நான் கண்டேன் - அந்த வரிசையில் உள்ளவர் மட்டுமல்ல அட நானும் ஏமந்தேன் ஆத்திரம் என்பது பெண்களுக்கெல்லாம் அடுப்படி வரைதானே - ஒரு ஆதிக்க நாயகன் சாதிக்க வந்தால் அடங்குதல் முறைதானே

என் ஜன்னல் நிலவுக்கு என்னாச்சு- En Jannal Nilavukku - Chokka Thangam

Such a beautiful song with great melody and sung by Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam. Vijayakanth and Soundarya (who died in a helicopter crash some years ago) star in the movie. I bet that no one told Hariharan that he was singing for Vijaykanth! Like always, some of the lyrics here are just not translatable, though they are so beautifully written. But, the song is so great to hear, so enjoy! "Whatever happened to my 'window' moon? It has been a long time since I saw" "You are a beauty who roll your eyes and rule me; you are the string of jasmine flowers which have been dusted with the Kumkum; your body is the genesis of the fragrant breeze;" "Only the winds that whiz past you and I know how many birthmarks you have" "Only the darkness and I understand your speed of action" "You are the huge flower garden where the flowers grow with a vengeance and which ooze so much honey in which I drown" "Ten fingers are not enough for your romance, bring a lakh of them". I'll skip the net couple of lines ;) "Of the three fruits (Mango, Jackfruit, Banana), the most important is the first which I see in you" skip... does not translate well. "You, who and I were connected in a prior birth, came now; I am stuck with you forever" "I lived as a lonely island, your hands hugged me like garlands".

பனி இல்லாத மார்கழியா - ஆனந்த ஜோதி (Pani Illatha from Anandha Jyothi)

This is an MGR song where he dances to this tune with Devika. Music by the fantastic duo Viswanathan-Ramamurthy and of course, the lyrics by Kannadasan. They used to say that TM Soundararajan adjusted his vocals differently for MGR than for Sivaji. Just the same way I can't tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi, I could not tell the difference. You listen and decide. This is a pretty fast moving song. "Is there a december without snow? Is there a king without battalions? How about fruits that are not sweet? Is there Tamil which has three legs without music, one of the three legs?" "Is there a painting without beauty? Is there a woman's heart without desires? Is there a land without rains? Is there a flowering creeper without flowers?" "Is there an epic without the hero? Is there a deed without the heroine? (These lines don't translate that well. The rhyming  and the meaning in Tamil is perfect) How about a drama without art form? Is there a youth without love?" As we have seen many times, Kannadasan wraps up the song with the last stanza very different than the first few. "All of the pointless running, thoughtless singing, and talking like foes are all the story of the youth!

துளி துளி துளி மழையாய் வந்தாளே - பையா (Thuli Thuli Thuli from Paiyaa)

Excellent song set to music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Haricharan and Tanvi have sung this very nicely. However, the real attraction to me is the simplicity of these lyrics. BTW, Tamanna Bhatia and Karthi are the two lead actors in the movie and for a while the news was all about their alleged love affair. However, Karthi came out and said No! What the heck was the guy thinking??? "Shae came as the little tiny drops of rain; in the heat of the body, she evaporated and vanished; One look and you want to keep looking and you want to ask her name; on seeing her flowery smile, I want to fly like the breeze with happiness" "My feet are prompting me to Go, Go, Go with her; My heart is killing me saying tel, tell, tell her; she stole my heart so beautifully" "She is an angel and one life ain't long enough to enjoy her beautiful face; I can smell her in the breeze, so I wonder whether the flowers consult with her before forming their own fragrance. When that single thread of hair dances on your forehead my heart feels like it was struck by lightning and your looks will lift me up. When I look at your cheeks I want to feel the kiss on them; and when I look at your feet, I want to be those anklets on your feet" "I am yearning to go with you in the beautiful evening on the roads; As her shadows begin to fall on the ground, I want to run and hold them in my heart. Just when I looked at her, she bound me by her spell, cut me to pieces without any scars and did something to disturb my whole being!
