This is another song from Deepavali, brilliant song, especially the charanam part. You can view it on YouTube. Again, beautiful picturization. And I love the lyrics... Especially the part "Are you the color from the seven shades?" "Are you the dream that is stuck in my eyes?" "Are you the dew on the flower?" just brilliant...

Kadhal Vaithu - Deepavali

Frankly, I like this song because of the tune and because
I liked the movie not necessarily for its lyrics... I have a weak spot for love stories, so it was natural for me to like this. The high funda fights were a total waste. But the mental lapse causing confusion sounds plausible and I liked both Ravi and Bhavana - they acted well.

Yuvan Shankar Raja has done an excellent job in the movie. Almost all the songs were big hit. The picturaization of the songs is also excellent.

You can both listen and see the song in YouTube. You got to see the clip to make sense of some of the things in the lyrics, especially the last stanza.

The line about how he did not believe the stories about Devathai (Goddess) until he saw her is well written, though we have heard this type of stuff many times over.

The only thing I have problem understanding is "Vanam thiranthaal mazhai irukum en vayathai thiranthaal nee iruppai"...

Oru Varthai Pesa Oru Varusham from Ayya

I love this song for the simplicity of the lyrics. It feels more like prose. Simple, easy to relate to. The lines about "I imagined our own names in the wedding invitation from next door" is so reminiscent of the good old days when we tried superimposing ourselves in every possible opportunity. If any of you find the music online, please send in the link. It is a beautiful tune also...

Katrin Mozhi from Mozhi

The movie Mozhi is a fabulous movie with an off beat theme... We really enjoyed it and all the songs. Especially this one. You can view it on YouTube with lyrics.

I am not sure I quite understand a couple of lines. "Kadal Pesum Mozhiyellaam Saththakkoottil adangaathu" and "Oosai thoongum jaamaththil uchchi meengal mozhiyaagum".

Dolu Dolu thaan Adikkiraan

These two are songs from Pokkiri. Fabulous tunes. The words are more prose than poetry. It is pretty good though. The girl says she is a new Da Vinci code, as such a very controversial mound and that the guy is going in the right direction, but most likely going on the wrong one!!!

The second one is beautiful... Asin and Vijay do a fabulous dance and the tune is pretty good. Tiger hunts down a deer in the forest, but the reverse happens in the bed...

But this is the best... He says, her hip and the God are the same as both are invisible...

Paniyillaatha Maargazhiyaa

I am not sure how best to interpret all of this... Basically every line is referring to an absolute requirement finally leading to the line that says "How can there be youth without love". However, when the first line asks "How can there be a winter without snow" (something to that effect) or the line like "How can there be an art that is not beautiful", one can argue all of these are possible...

However, the line about women and want/like has no exception...

So, may be Kannadasan is using all of these to say, for the most part all of this is true, but there are indeed exceptions to all these rules; so, there may be exception to the question "How can there be youth without love"...

Senthamizh Then Mozhiyaal

I have been too busy to do much here. But this song is just too good to pass... Here I am, sitting on the deck in our house during a July morning, that is unusually chilly, a lot of greenery around and a nice hot cup of cofee and my iTunes playign this song.... Life is almost perfect... I heard one G. Ravi sing this for a contest. This guy is amazing. Listen to it here.

Kadhal being compared to Kadavul in that you can only feel it is pretty cool I thought.

Another beautiful song, set to music by Vidyasagar... Basically in every comparison, both would work, but have different characteristics... Madi and Thalayanai, for example - to help one have a good sleep either the Lap or a pillow would be good, but each has its own pros and cons and there are contexts in which one is better than the other.

OK... I love this song and the tune. It is from a movie called Jay Jay. As you can see, the lyrics is here not because of any serious literary value and is probably demeaning to Kannadasan, whose lyrics appears next to his beautiful lyrics.

A classic... I can remember Wednesday nights when All India Radio had a program from 10 PM - 11 PM playing older songs and some of these classics filling the airwaves. P. Susheela is just brilliant in some of these songs and Kannadasan, well, what can I say!!!

This is yet another song set to really nice tune...

I never knew that arugampul is something that the goats ate... I only knew that there was some connection between that and Ganesha because it was always featured during Vinayaka Chathurthi and I was always curious how one told the difference between regular grass and arugampul...

Netru Illadha Matram from Puthiya Mugam

Some of the lines make you think really hard... Kavithai Variyin Suvai artham puriym varai... Is this really true? Sometimes it is the understanding that makes one appreciate the kavithai better...

Vaanam illamale Bhoomi undaagalaam - I am sure several scientists will take issue with this..

As I analyze this more I am really having my doubts about why I think this is a good one... Which proves the point "Kavithai Variyin Suvai artham puriym varai".

This song by Srinivas and Kalyani Menon is really nice. Vidyasagar's music for this is brilliant... I love the lines "idhu aAn nOyA peN nOyA kaaman nOy thaAn enpOmE" where kaaman can mean Cupid or it could simply be the English word Common...

This is a fantastic song from a really nice movie... I am not sure I quite understand the "Koocham unnai Nettith thalla". What is Netti? Do I have that wrong? Also, "Uthadugal naangum" - there are only two that I can see... Whats going on here? Looks too juicy to me...

This is just lovely song all in all... The lyrics are great, the tune is awesome and above all, if you can only concentrate on Aishwarya Rai and connect the lyrics to her, it is perfect.... Some people may take issues with the first two lines Aish... but remember it is all relative... If she has such a thin hip, then anything above looks big...

Introduction

I love tamil movie songs.... I simply love them to a point that it can be called an addiction... I have tapes of songs from 1978, I have a ton of CDs and now a ton of them on our iPod and I am constantly listening to them on two of my favorite radio stations on the internet: Merina and NUM radio

However, all this time, I have been fascinated by the music and the tunes and despite the fact that I have been fascinated by the lyrics, I never paid much attention to them. Why? My theory has been that my brain has only so much capacity that I either can remember the tunes or the lyrics and not both. And that it would be easier to find lyrics than tunes...

So, after all these years, I have begun paying attention to the lyrics and am beginning to discover a treasure... I am trying to pick a few that is very appealing to me (thats right, me!!!) and catalog them here for others to enjoy and comment on....
