பனி இல்லாத மார்கழியா - ஆனந்த ஜோதி (Pani Illatha from Anandha Jyothi)

This is an MGR song where he dances to this tune with Devika. Music by the fantastic duo Viswanathan-Ramamurthy and of course, the lyrics by Kannadasan. They used to say that TM Soundararajan adjusted his vocals differently for MGR than for Sivaji. Just the same way I can't tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi, I could not tell the difference. You listen and decide. This is a pretty fast moving song. "Is there a december without snow? Is there a king without battalions? How about fruits that are not sweet? Is there Tamil which has three legs without music, one of the three legs?" "Is there a painting without beauty? Is there a woman's heart without desires? Is there a land without rains? Is there a flowering creeper without flowers?" "Is there an epic without the hero? Is there a deed without the heroine? (These lines don't translate that well. The rhyming  and the meaning in Tamil is perfect) How about a drama without art form? Is there a youth without love?" As we have seen many times, Kannadasan wraps up the song with the last stanza very different than the first few. "All of the pointless running, thoughtless singing, and talking like foes are all the story of the youth!

Excellent song set to music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Haricharan and Tanvi have sung this very nicely. However, the real attraction to me is the simplicity of these lyrics. BTW, Tamanna Bhatia and Karthi are the two lead actors in the movie and for a while the news was all about their alleged love affair. However, Karthi came out and said No! What the heck was the guy thinking??? "Shae came as the little tiny drops of rain; in the heat of the body, she evaporated and vanished; One look and you want to keep looking and you want to ask her name; on seeing her flowery smile, I want to fly like the breeze with happiness" "My feet are prompting me to Go, Go, Go with her; My heart is killing me saying tel, tell, tell her; she stole my heart so beautifully" "She is an angel and one life ain't long enough to enjoy her beautiful face; I can smell her in the breeze, so I wonder whether the flowers consult with her before forming their own fragrance. This is an old Tamil classic with Sivaji Ganesan. Looking back at this, we all feel silly as to how we liked movies of this sorts, but it does not matter. It was a great movie for its time. M.S. Viswanathan's music was great and Sivaji was screaming and overacting. In this song, Vanishree does the typical dance sequence of movies, but Susheela sings this so well. I remember listening to songs like this at 10 PM on Wednesdays (Only night in the 70's that Radio Ceylon had film songs that late). "Like pure milk, in the night skies, who are you waiting to see? Tomorrow night, exactly at this time, come running, you moon; tonight, my king is not here, so please leave; you, breeze, please stop to look at my lonliness" "At the entrance to my eyes my lord, my master, showed up; he showered my thoughts with garlands; did he become  poet just so he can sing about the beautiful girl (that I am)? he became an artist after looking at how soft and beautiful the womanhood is!" "Why am I leaving the scene without expressing my desires? Just when I was ready to do so, why did my shyness creep in? My feet are following the path that my lord traced ahead of me; why are your eyes so intoxicated tonight, you girl?"

கண்ணானால் நான் இமையாவேன் - சாரதா

One of those old classics that Really like. Very simple tune with the usual TMS-Susheela pair. My guess would be that this was one of Viswanathan - Ramamurthy creations. Woman: "If you are the eyes then I am the eyelids. If you are the breeze, then I am the creeper" Man: "If you are the earth, then I am the tree; If you are the rains then I am the crops" This is all Kannadasan and I don't dare interpret it. But it looks like the woman says I will be your protector and then says how she is the "giving in" type. The man then says how he protects the earth as a tree (shade, that is) and then goes on to say how he flourishes under her. This is all what I gather and I could be all wrong! Woman: "If you are the language, I am the meaning; If you are the thorn than I am the flower" Man: "If you are the parrot then I am the fruit; if you are the question then I am the answer". You can take these literal translations and extrapolate it like I did before :) Woman: " If you are the ocean then I am the river; if you are the arrow than I am the bow" Man: "If you are body then I am the soul; If you are the sound then I am the music" I am not sure about this last stanza - totally out of rhyme and the tune is completely different. செந்தமிழ் நாட்டு தமிழச்சியே சேல உடுத்த தயங்குறியே - வண்டிச் சோலை சின்னராசு

I never paid a lot of attention to the lyrics as always, until last week when I was driving back from Hanover, NH. I was listening to AR Rahman songs and these lyrics caught my attention. It is one of those movies from 1994 that I can't rememebr seeing and one wonders why AR Rahman set music to. Obviously because he was just starting. Satyaraj is really funny in the dance sequence of this song. So, please be sure to watch it. "You, the Tamil girl from the beautiful Tamil Nadu, why are you hesitating to wear the Sari? This is one of the most reputed weaving centers of the world and here you are, running around in scant swimming cloths. Instead of revealing the beauty of yours to just your husband you seem to be showing it off by setting up stores in the street" "Don't consider sexual fidelity as a passe, instead consider it s weapon. You should tie the beautiful hair that is floating in the air and adorn it with flowers. You need to understand the difference between old history and the material things that have gotten old (in Tamil, the two words are pretty close). " Really, the second stanza is lost on me and in my mind, it appears totally incoherent and a filler of time. Enjoy!

This is yet another Ilayaraja classic sung by KJ Yesudas and Chitra. After years, this tune still continues linger around and surprisingly I can still remember most of the lyrics. "I can write a thousand poems in the wind when you give me that one look. I can't stop thinking about you every day and I hug you with those thoughts". "The hand with the bangles created music when it moved gracefully just the way a new note creates music when sung. Your laughter reminds me of the sounds of an anklet; your neck reminds me of the long neck of the rare right handed conch. I lost my 'self', which has the tendency go give everything I have to others, to you, the beautiful peacock." It gets a little racier here and actually it is this stanza that I remember the most :) "I hugged that pillow and made it wet, what recourse do I have now? I set up the bed for you. I am waiting for you to hold my hip and pull me to your side and give me that tight hug. You forgot to think of me as a result of which I flew all alone. Please lift the veil and look at me. One of my all time favorite songs! Set to music by Vidyasagar and sung by Hariharan, this is a fantastic song. I don't think we can say the same about the movie, though both Madhavan and Meera Jasmin are excellent actors and I believe this movie was not a good one, full of action and fights! This whole song is rooted in "lies". "My love, please don't lie to me (that you don't love me). Even if you lie, you still are my lover. With your eyes, you played a game of dice with mine. With your palms, you exchanged those lines to mine. You lied to me and escaped. However, I closed my eyes and was plotting a search when you appeared sweetly in my dreams". "(In you) I saw the shrub where the lie flowers bloom. Secretly, I opened your heart and became the fertilizer for the shrub; Whenever I saw you, my eyes ate you up. I was so occupied with you that my shadow left me." "My love, are you a single drop of rain or the Ocean? I got caught in the swirl of your cheek and escaped through the strand of hair falling on your forehead. எனதுயிரே எனதுயிரே - பீமா

Harris Jeyaraj did a wonderful job setting music for Bheema. Many good songs and also a decent movie with Vikram and Trisha. Everywhere I have looked, it lists many singers, but I don't get it as to how come so many female singers. Quite possible that the song comes multiple times in the movie! "You, my soul, became just mine. You, my relative, sprouted (out of nowhere) like God. Like my foot on the road, I join you for the rest of our life. The smell of the flower that is our love, will extend in the days to come" "As the nights vanish, I see the East in your eyes. As our separation vanishes, I hear your blabber as beautiful music. Until I met you, my life was a blank white sheet of paper. With your eyes you drew a beautiful drawing on it. Just with that tiny look of yours or with the little word that you utter you make a million rainbows" I am really not so sure of the relevance of the second para to the rest of the song. Also, I cannot seem to find the second para in many of the videos available on YouTube. Quite possible it got taken out in the movie - happens in Tamil films. We have several songs that were recorded for movies, but never appeared in the actual movie. Enjoy.

This beautiful song set to raga Riti Gowlai is composed by a relative newcomer James Vasanthan, sung by Belly Raj (yup, thats the name) and Deepa Mariam. It is really an attention grabbing song. And the movie itself is not worth watching IMHO. The transformation of Swetha Reddy to be a real southerner is remarkable! "With your two beautiful eyes you roped and pulled me. As though this was not enough, with that little naughty smile you pushed me a bit by bit and hid me (in your eyes)" "Some days I came near you wanting to talk, but then I thought your looks are good enough and moved on. The colorful poem that my two eyes write, is that what love is? If so, how come there are no words, no sound and also how come it could be read even in the dark of night?" "The times that are neither night nor day, do they vanish with you? Does the gap between you created by me not being able to touch you also vanish then? " "I am dying to lie down in your lap, but the shyness stops me from doing it. SPB does a fabulous job to the music of Yuvan Shankar Raja. I love listening to SPB remotely. Couple of times I have seen him in live performances, I have been deeply unhappy! He lectures too much and sometimes I want to get up and say "I paid all this money to just listen to you sing! Shut Up!" Regardless, I love to hear the man sing. He is a genius. One of the brilliant Kannadasn lyrics, set to tune by K.V. Mahadevan for Veera Abimanyu in Raga Sahana. Of course, you know I am going to say that not knowing Tamil is a serious problem in understanding the beauty of the lyrics, but I found the video of the song for you to listen to, where you can get the idea of the play of the word "Thén" which stands for Honey as well as a common word ending. A relatively old classic, sung by Jeyachandran and Chitra and set to music by none other than A.R. Rahman! Very simple, yet powerful lyrics. Horrible actors though! "Hey, the drop of rain who fell on me, where were you all this time? The poem that I wrote today, where were you all this time? The subtle breeze that just woke me up, where were you all this time? The beautiful music that intoxicated me, where were you all this time?" G. V. Prakash, I believe is AR Rahman's nephew. He has set to music this song, sung by a relative newcomer - Deepa Mariam and Hariharan, my absolute favorite singer! The movie is Seval - Rooster. Frankly, this is a song with so many little nuances that are specific to Taml Nadu and life that my attempts to translate is simply becoming impossible. For example, one line will translate as "for four days I have been ful of your thoughts and I should sweat as a result"! I know what means, but the explanations will be long and lengthy. In addition, the seemingly disconnected sentences also get lost in translation. So, my advice is, just enjoy the song and if you know Tamil, interpret it the way you understand. Better yet, add it as a comment. So, rather than literally translate this, I will refer you to the YouTube video where the same has been already done! Real nice and attention grabbing tune - set to music by Vijay Anthony and sung by Karthik, Nitish Gopalan and Maya. First off, it is ridiculous that most of these movie personalities have just a single name - Maya! Looking them up on the web becomes so ridiculously complicated. Secondly, in this song, the best performance is by Maya, and she begins the song, so why list her last??? "My love, I can't stand even a hair falling from your head. I will hold you in my eyelashes! My love, I refuse to accept even a second of our separation. I search for your face even in my dreams!" "Is it that the clouds searching for you in the skies are crying? Is it the case that the Earth is rotating with me to help me unite with you?" "Your kiss on my forehead touches my heart and is shattered. The time spent holding your hands and chatting is so sweet. The wind comes at me daily, passes by after scribbling your name all over me. I poured myself fully through your forehead (???)" "I will wear those flowers that you glanced on my hair. I will keep the stone that your feet touched on my nose stud. I will keep you, who I touched, in the box that is my heart and give myself up!" "I want to get lost because it is my desire that you will go searching for me daily! You are the doll with a mustache that I hug and sleep every day. I am the grazing ground who is lying here and please, graze me all over! As I sleep without a cradle everyday, come and kiss me on my breasts!" "I am the love creeper that is climbing all over you! The lyrics are a little disconnected and that is what gives a charm to this song. It flows well together in Tamil and I doubt that it does so in English. It is indeed an attention grabbing scene, but also the video is attention grabbing with Nakul and Sunaina.

Now I am going to back to an old classic - from Paava Mannippu, a Bhimsingh movie with Sivaji Ganesan, released in 1961. The lyrics is by Kannadasan. As you read along, you will see what a great thinker Kannadasan was. He was a prolific lyricist and philosopher, and many people give as much credit to him as to the alcohol that he consumed. As you know, not all who consume alcohol can be a Kannadasan! "From the days of arrival, the skies have not changed! Neither have the moon, the water, the Ocean Winds, flowers, the sands, the creepers, the gardens and the rivers. But, the man has changed! He has climbed on to the Religion". How great this is! Obviously, many of the things Kannadasn listed are indeed being transformed by the same man now, as long as he can! Thank God the Moon is beyond reach so far. "If situation changes, the people change their attiudes accordingly ("principle-less"). They provide wrong/false views of justice and honesty. Every day they tell everyone else about the religion and divisions thereof and claim that all of these are the fate as determined by the God himself." This is my absolute favorite part - "Looking at the birds, he built airplanes; looking at those swimming and jumping fish, he built boats; hearing the echos, he built the radios; what did he see that made him introduce the concept of money?" "Happiness and Love are dictated by nature; The superior and inferior castes are designed by the man; The mother Nature produced all of these in this world that the man, the sinner, has begun separating/destroying". Set to a very simple and pleasing tune, the lyrics are just superb. Though I have not seen the movie yet, I can understand how this song relates to the story line just by the name of the movie and the looks of the actors. Na. Muthukumar has done a fabulous job with the lyrics. Of course, the simplicity and the meaning that comes through in Tamil is simply not easy to translate... "She is not that beautiful, yet there is no match for her! Her dark color is nothing to write home about, yet it is not a handicap!" "Her education is nothing to brag about. I began studying her and haven't finished yet. I don't like the clothes she wears, yet I have not forgotten to notice them" "She did not have any pets while growing up and doesn't stop when I am taking care of her. She was not fortunate to have dolls to sleep with nor was I born like a doll myself" "Her hair is not long, yet I was lost in that forest and never returned. The ring in her finger is not gold, but the yearning to hold her hands have not subsided yet" "There is nothing like her relationship with me, just nothing!" "She never wore a silk Sari, but there is no comparison to the Chudithars that she wears. It never hurts when she yells at me because there is nothing like how much she cares." A very nice melodious song composed by Vijay Anthony. Anuja Iyer looks pretty hot in this song compared to her reserved Muslim girl acting throughout the movie. Not surprisingly, yet another lovely love song. "It (Love) blossoms so beautifully and attacks you pleasantly. The hearts caught in love are acting like uncontrolled bouncing balls" "Yearning to speak incessantly and with love, the words are bombarding against each other, but when we are closer it is the silence that would speak! Just when I am waiting to be caught in the prison of my lover's hands, I see the sanctum santorum with no one and my eyes cry..." "Let us both appear together in God's dreams. Let us think of living in the lines of poetry. When we both walk we only see one shadow and in that one shadow we both are seen! I laugh sometimes and cry sometimes because of you, my love" "The sweetness of you invades my heart when I think of the sanctum sanctorum. When I think of you again, you cause so much pain in my heart! You became the pot full of water from those little drops of water and in half a second you made my hair grow grey! The one moment that you are not here, I appear to be a dead body!" Again, watch the video below to make a judgement on Anuja Iyer. This is the first time I am hearing the singers Janaki Iyer and Prasanna and they have done a terrific job!

Samy is a very enjoyable movie starring Vikram and Trisha. I really like Vikram and in this particular song, Trisha looks very nice, clad in either a Sari or half sari. And the song, sung by Chitra, is a great one. "Is this the day that I have been so eagerly waiting for? Is this really the day? Is he the one, is he really the one who will adorn the garlands?" "I became yours, really yours, as my afternoon dreams became reality. My days are moving like molasses as the day of marriage approaches, perhaps because of the weight of my sweet feelings. I will sing a song for myself without my lips opening or raising my voice" "The thought of the dramas that will be enacted in our house feels so sweet! As I try to hide from you, I can see the desperation in your eyes as you search me. You will eventually find me in the turns of the stairs and pretend that you still haven't seen me. Again, I love this movie and the songs. Harris Jeyaraj has done wonders, especially with the guitar. This is an old style dance in the movie - Surya and Simran. "I saw you the other day and lost the moment I saw you. My heart became sore and is full of small holes like the sifter". "Where did I go for all these days without seeing you? All those are wasted days". "You are the moon in the sky, but I am the one who is waning down here! Why don't you come with me so we can go to the village together?" "If I keep you on a weighing scale and balance it with gold, the scale would fail, won't it, my beauty?" (This is not referring to literally weighing her, as you can see!) "How can I not hug you and leave when you look directly at me and speak and I can notice the love oozing out of your eyes?" "I will certainly follow you just like your shadow. I will also touch you just the way smoke would and move out. I have hundreds of questions and dreams. Please answer them!" "You gave me your shoulder for me to rest my head. You came close to me by locking our fingers and pulling me. Why are your lips alone still so far away?" And so on it goes. Listen to the song and enjoy.

Nenjukkul Peithidum - Vaaranam Aayiram

Hariharan is at his best in this song and Harris Jeyaraj has done a wonderful job on all songs in this movie. Surya and Sameera Reddy look fabulous together in this movie where Oklahoma City bombing is a central theme.
